Bronte Surf Club
In 2005 Bronte Surf Life Saving Club
decided to begin the process of making their club more sustainable and
to work toward the longer term goal of Carbon Neutrality.
All members of the governing body were enthusiastic as they could see the growing concern about Climate Change and the potentially devastating effects upon the planet. Being a Surf Life Saving Club and at the forefront of many of these effects they felt it was their responsibility to make whatever changes necessary to the Club and its surrounds.
In the same way that Major
John
Bond in 1903 had a simple community idea that became Surf Lifesaving,
the largest volunteer organisation in the world, we believe that if we
show and foster environmental initiatives that we may be able to help
our community in demonstrating what can be done to arrest climate
change.
Since the 2nd World War many clubs have claimed to be the first.

Vital Plus
Vital Plus owner Frank Sellam immediately took to the concept of the
Low Carbon Spa & Beauty Initiative when he first heard about it.
After an initial phone conversation and proposal, he decided to engage
the Carbon Reduction Institute to undertake a carbon footprint analysis
of his business. Frank recognised that this would give him a
significant competitive advantage over other businesses in the
industry, while allowing him to take appropriate action to reduce his
carbon footprint which he could leverage against well-founded
calculations.
The Carbon Reduction Institute determined that
Frank’s business was responsible for just under 775 tonnes of CO2e last
year. This number was established using internationally recognised
methods and standards, and included emissions from fuel consumption,
electricity; staff commuting, flights; waste and product freight as
well as embodied emissions in products, assets and expenses. By
purchasing carbon credits to offset those unavoidable carbon emissions,
Vital Plus can now say it is truly carbon neutral.
Vital Plus purchase energy efficiency carbon credits from the HELP
project in New Zealand to offset their unavoidable carbon emissions.
The HELP projects distributes energy saving light globes around New
Zealand households, while also assisting in educating consumers about
the importance of reducing their carbon footprint at home. The HELP
credits meet CRI’s stringent assessment criteria for carbon credits and
bring along important other benefits.
